Food Fight 2021-22: The Kids are Worth the Fight

Great ideas often become great opportunities. And great opportunities have the power to change entire communities — especially in the midst of a pandemic. It’s the lesson Ashley Kanney learned last year when her one-time school food donation turned into a thriving non-profit, Feed the Kids Columbus (FTKC).

“(The pandemic) gave exposure to a problem that has always been there,” she said of food insecurity among central Ohioans. “And the need is even higher this year.” FTKC currently serves 12 schools in the following districts, Columbus City, Dublin, Groveport Madison, Plain City and South-Western, with take-home bags of food and supplemental groceries.

Health Care Logistics® is doing its part to help. As part of its annual Food Fight, employees from each facility compete to donate the most pounds of food for a designated non-profit.

Two groups representing HCL, Sales and Technology Services (TS), recently volunteered their time to assemble bags of donated food for the organization. Together, the groups packed 3,125 five-day food bags and 2,000 snack bags for a total of 35,000 meals for students.

“It was amazing to see so many people pull together and the thought and care that went into the items packed,” said Chris Cotton, TS Support Team Lead.

Kanney said the bags are so much more than food.

“They let these children know that there are good and kind people out there who care about them and want them to succeed, just because it’s the right thing to do,” she said. “That is powerful.”

In addition to food donations, HCL employees raised cash through chili cookoffs, a garage sale, equipment sale and individual giving. To date, the company’s cash donation to FTKC exceeds $3,000.
