Confidently Navigate New BUD Standards

There’s no wiggle room when it comes to expiration dates, especially not for compounded sterile preparations (CSPs). Those should be clearly labeled with their Beyond-Use Date (BUD) to minimize the risks to patient safety. New updates to USP <797>, however, may have some healthcare workers uncertain of that date and how it is determined.

Published Nov. 1, 2022, the update includes new factors to consider when establishing BUDs for CSPs. It changes the characterization from microbial contamination risk levels (low, medium and high) to categories 1 and 2 CSPs. In general, the storage periods in the official chapter are similar and sometimes longer than the BUDs in the revised chapter.

Using the new formula, determine the BUD then add preprinted Beyond-Use Date Labels to packages. Labels clearly identify the time after which a CSP must not be used and help users avoid the risk of administrating expired meds.
