Steer Clear of Wrong Route Administration Risk

At quick glance, containers for ear drops and eye drops look almost identical and their intended route spellings are dangerously similar, too. So it’s easy to understand why meds intended for otic use could be misread as optic and administered in the eye instead of the ear.

While mix-ups are understandable, they aren’t acceptable. To reduce the risk of wrong route administration, ISMP (Institute for Safe Medication Practices) recommends placing an auxiliary label with a photo of an ear or eye on the dropper bottle prior to dispensing (ISMP, December 2022). Doing so is an easy way to raise awareness for the proper administration route and raises the standard of patient safety, too.
